Anger over Khoisan Leader's name for street

The Cape Times (30 December 2010) reported on the reaction of a direct descendant of Krotoa regarding the City of Cape Town's decision to rename Castle Street to Krotoa Place; apparently without consulting his family. The descendant, Jakobus Faasen, who was quoted numerous times in the article, was introduced as a language expert at the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport.

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport hereby states that the personal opinion of the descendant in his private capacity has been captured in this article and that the opinion does reflect the official views of the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport and the Western Cape Provincial Geographical Names Committee on this matter. The renaming of streets is the core business of the City of Cape Town.

The Western Cape Provincial Geographical Names Committee has been established in terms of the South African Geographical Names Act, 1998, and its members are appointed by the provincial Minister for Cultural Affairs, Sport and Recreation. This Committee makes recommendations to the South African Geographical Names Council (SAGNC) and, through the SAGNC, the national Minister for Arts and Culture on matters pertaining to geographical names in the Western Cape. The next meeting of the Committee will be held on 20 January 2011.
