Mr Welile Nhlapo, national security adviser to President Jacob Zuma, has been appointed South Africa’s Special Representative to the Great Lakes Region at the Department of International Relations and Cooperation.
The appointment is aimed at further boosting and strengthening South Africa’s cooperation and relations with countries in the Great Lakes, which includes Burundi, Uganda, Tanzania, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Rwanda.
Before the Presidency appointment, Mr Nhlapo had been South Africa’s Ambassador to the United States of America. He has served as South Africa’s representative to the African Union mission in Burundi, and earlier as ambassador to the Federal Republic of Ethiopia.
Ambassador Nhlapo has extensive experience of working in the Great Lakes region, having also headed President Zuma’s Burundi technical team, when then Deputy President Zuma was mediator in the Burundi conflict.
Presidency Director-General, Dr Cassius Lubisi, wished Mr Nhlapo well in his new posting, in which he will continue to work closely with the Presidency.
