South African Ambassador to the Republic of Thailand, Douglas Gibson who is also accredited to the Union of Myanmar (Burma) had, yesterday 6 December 2010, met with a leader of the National League for Democracy (NLD), Ms Aung San Suu Kyi following her release from fifteen-years of house arrest.
During the meeting, Aung San Suu Kyi hailed South Africa’s great moral authority as an inspiration to those striving for Democracy and expressed hope that people would take a leaf from South Africa.
Ambassador Gibson reiterated the commitment made by Deputy Minister Ebrahim Ebrahim on behalf of the South African government to offer its experience on the path to reconciliation and transition to democracy with the people of Myanmar.
