Two former local municipalities in the North West, Kagisano and Molopo local municipalities have now been amalgamated to form a single local municipality with effect post the 2011 local government elections held.
The new municipality is now called Kagisano - Molopo local municipality pending a public participation process to determine a new name. Kagisano - Molopo local municipality falls under the jurisdiction of Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati DistrictMunicipality and is situated north of Vryburg and has an estimated population of 115 310 and 23 899 households.
The primary motivation behind the amalgamation was to enhance the institution viability and to improve the provision of government - wide services to communities. This decision was preceded by a series of consultation processes with affected municipalities and communities.
A Management Transitional Committee (MTC) comprising of officials from the Departments of Local Government and Traditional Affairs, Provincial Treasury, Kagisano and Molopo local municipalities, Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati district municipality and the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA) has already been established to deal with all issues during the period of transition.
The South African Municipal Worker’s Union (SAMWU) and the Independent Municipal and Allied Trade Union (IMATU) also participate as members of the MTC for purposes of consultative engagement on human resources and labour issues.
