It’s all systems go for the Knysna Oyster Festival, which kicks off today.
Alan Winde, Minister of Economic Opportunities visited the Knysna Tourism Office today, where he was assured that all plans were on track for the event.
The event generated R70 million for the local economy last year and brought in 60 000 visitors to the Garden Route. It takes place until 13 July.
“The events economy is a big revenue and jobs driver, and a vital part of the Western Cape’s tourism industry. Specifically for our smaller towns, events bring much needed stimulus to their economy.
“Not only does the Oyster Festival generate millions for Knysna, it also raised R15 million for local charities last year. Well done to all the local volunteers who continue to make these events happen and in doing so manage to give back to the community via the charities involved.”
Minister Winde encouraged Western Cape residents to explore our region and take part in the Oyster Festival.
“Domestic travellers are the bread and butter of our tourism industry. By supporting local events, residents are able to contribute to job creation in the area”.
