Alcohol blitz roadblocks: 29 arrests this weekend

24 Integrated Safely Home Roadblocks were conducted across the Western Cape this weekend and a total of 3695 vehicles were stopped as part of the Provincial Government’s Safely Home campaign.

29 Drivers were arrested for driving under the influence, after 1505 drivers were screened for being under suspicion of the offence.

The highest breath alcohol reading was recorded in Beaufort West service area at 0,94mg/1000ml, which was more than three times over the legal limit of 0,24mg/1000ml.

1727 speeding offences were recorded and a total of 382 fines were issued for various traffic violations ranging from driver to vehicle fitness.

The highest speed recorded was 184km/h in a 120km/h zone on the N1 near Paarl.

The weekend saw three tragic fatalities on Provincial Roads. On Saturday, one person lost their life in a road incident on the R27 near Saldanha in a head on collision and Sunday saw two fatalities in two separate road incidents on the N1. One person died on the N1 near Worcester in a head on collision and another person died on the N1 near Paarl where the driver lost control and the vehicle overturned.

Whilst we will continue to conduct roadblocks and checks, we need drivers and passengers to assist. Check your tyres regularly, make sure you keep your head lights on and ensure that your vehicle is roadworthy.

A change in driver behaviour is needed when it comes to speeding, and driving under the influence. You do not want to be responsible for the death of a person because of your own irresponsible behaviour.  I urge drivers to take care, don’t speed, and don’t get behind the wheel if you have been drinking.
