Agriculture sector records improvement in the second quarter of 2012 - Statistics South Africa

A Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) report on South Africa's economic growth has recorded a 5.8 per cent improvement in the agriculture sector.

The report looked at the country's gross domestic product (GDP) for the second quarter of 2012. According to Stats SA, the statistical release contains independently compiled annual estimates of gross domestic product (GDP) for the period 2002 to 2010 as well as an estimate for 2011. This is derived as the sum of 4 quarters of the year.

According to the statistical report, the agriculture, forestry and fisheries industry's performance was among the most notable performances in the second quarter of 2012 compared with the second quarter of 2011.

"These results are pleasing, especially when one considers the current global economic situation.  Our mandate is to create 1 million jobs in agriculture. This achievement is an achievement for all our stakeholders and partners in the agriculture sector."

A statement from the Nedbank Economic Unit said agricultural production will continue to rise during the remainder of the year.

Jobs in the agriculture sector increased by 31 000 in the second half of 2011 and a further 26 000 in the sector for the first quarter of 2012.
