Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries on adjudication process of DAFF female entrepreneur awards

Adjudication process of the daff female entrepreneur awards

The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries has been inundated with calls from media regarding the adjudication process of Female Entrepreneur Awards.

The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF), in partnership with Total South Africa host the DAFF Female Entrepreneur Awards (FEA) annually.

The DAFF FEA programme has, since its inception in 1999, been an empowerment initiative to honour and reward the efforts and contribution of women, young women and women living with disabilities for the role they play towards increasing food security, job creation, economic growth and poverty alleviation in the sector.

The Department wishes to point out that the adjudication process for the DAFF Female Female Entrepreneur Awards is informed by a guiding document which provides a framework on factors to be considered when a panel of adjudicators scores each category of the awards. This guiding document is in the public domain and may be accessed on DAFF’s website.

It is further guided by the terms and conditions of the competition and entry requirements per category as reflected in the Guiding Document. These variables are as follows:

  • Adherence to legal requirements, this variable is a prerequisite for the competition but a non-scoring element. The variable looks at the following factors:
    • Entity registration certificate
    • Information on occupational health and safety matters (e.g. protective clothing)
    • Employment Insurance Fund (UIF) records
    • Employment contracts, salary advice and leave records
    • Tax Clearance Certificate
    • Phytosanitary and Health Requirements
  • The technical and social aspects of the business enterprise:
    • Natural Resources Management
    • Production and Marketing plan
    • Investment in human capital development
    • Social responsibility
    • Financial Management and bookkeeping

It is worth noting that this information is submitted by Provinces in a form of a profile accompanied by supporting documentation and a five minutes video footage of the business enterprise. Furthermore, to point out that The DAFF Female Entrepreneur Awards adjudication commences at provincial level and culminates to national level.

The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries has developed the adjudication process as a tool to standardize the process, increase transparency and promote integrity.  The Department is committed to being objective, transparent and open.
