African Union Commission Chairperson Dr Dlamini Zuma Bilateral meeting with UN Secretary Ban Ki Moon - UN General Assembly 2012

The newly elected Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma today, 23 September 2012 held a bilateral meeting with the United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon at the UN headquarters in New York, USA. The Secretary-General congratulated Dr. Dlamini Zuma on her election as the new AU Commission Chairperson.

Dr. Dlamini Zuma is expected to participate in a series of meetings and activities at the 67th Session of the United Nations General Assembly which is scheduled to officially open on 25 September 2012.

The theme for this year's General Assembly is: “Bringing about adjustment or settlement of international disputes or situations by peaceful means.''The two leaders discussed the need to further strengthen the strategic partnership between the AU and the UN, not only on peace and security issues but also more on the sustainable development agenda.

As priority issues for Africa, the Secretary-General underlined primary education, poverty eradication, response to natural disasters, and renewable energy. The two leaders agreed to work closely together on these areas of common concern.

A high level delegation of the AU that includes some of the Commissioners has arrived in New York. The president of the Republic of South Africa, President Jacob Zuma is among the leaders who are expected to address the Assembly.
