The National Assembly (NA) today announced that an ad-hoc Committee would be established to consider the report of Public Protector, Advocate Thuli Madonsela, on the investigation into allegations of maladministration and corruption in the procurement of premises to accommodate the head office of the Electoral Commission.
The ad-hoc Committee will ensure that the matter is dealt with as speedily as possible.
The Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs, which usually exercises oversight over the Electoral Commission and considers matters related to it, has already got a full programme of draft legislation before it. This includes legislation related to the forthcoming national and provincial election in 2014.
The ad-hoc Committee will, as is the case with other Committees of the NA, comprise proportional representation from political parties represented in the House.
With the report as its only business, the ad-hoc Committee will be able to devote all its attention to the report. The Committee is expected to work to a very strict deadline, which will be announced next week.
Parliament regards the report in a very serious light and wishes to see consideration of it, together with a proposed course of action, concluded as soon as possible.
