Ad Hoc Committee refers matter to fifth Parliament

The Ad Hoc Committee to consider submissions by the President on the Public Protector’s (PP) report has resolved that the fifth Parliament, the incoming Parliament, should rather take up this task.

The committee felt that there was not enough time for it to do justice to the task at hand. The deadline for the submission of the Committee’s report to the Speaker of the National Assembly is on Wednesday.

Two motions were put on the table by members of the Committee to consider.

The ANC (six members) moved that the consideration rather be dealt with by the fifth Parliament due to the time constraints and the enormity of the work. It felt a thorough job would not be done. This motion was supported by the IFP (one member).

The motion was rejected by the DA (two members) and Freedom Front Plus (one member) who instead brought a second motion: “that the Committee starts its work immediately”. This second motion was not carried as it did not enjoy majority support.

“The Committee noted that despite its commitment to the task, there was insufficient time to complete the work as set out in the terms of reference.

“The Ad Hoc Committee recommends that this matter be referred to the fifth Parliament for consideration,” read the adopted Committee report. For media enquiries or interviews with the chairperson, please contact:
