The Acting National Commissioner of Correctional Services Mr Zach Modise has welcomed the arrest of five correctional officials in Worcester in the Western Cape region today, 10 July 2014, on allegations of fraud and corruption.
The five correctional officials were arrested by the South Africa Police Services (SAPS) today following an 18 month joint operation of SAPS, State Security and Correctional Services. Four officials were taken by the police at work and the fifth one was arrested at home. Acting National Commissioner Modise says “the arrest of these officials for alleged incidents of fraud and corruption should be sending an emphatic ‘zero tolerance message’ against fraud and corruption, in line with the pledge made by Minister Michael Masutha of Justice and Correctional Service when he addressed a meeting of the Portfolio Committee in Cape Town last week.”
The five officials are expected to appear at the Worcester magistrate’s court tomorrow morning at 9h00 and their names will be revealed after their appearance. The five officials are expected to face a series of charges in terms of various sections of legislation governing the prevention and combating of corruption as well as drugs.
