Access to adequate housing is a constitutional human right

The Department of Human Settlement Public Safety and Liaison will build 600 houses for the community of Groot Marico that is living in an informal settlement situated along the N4 road to Swwartruggens. The announcement was made by North West Premier Thandi Modise during the Human Rights day commemoration in Groot Marico on Wednesday.

According to Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison MEC Desbo Mohono having access to house with basic amenities is a constitutional right. MEC said the Groot Marico Housing project is one of the initiatives by the department to speed-up the eradication of informal settlement in the province and the country at large.

Mohono further outlined that the R59 million housing project which is expected to kick-start in the next financial year is in line with the outcome 8. She said the houses will improve quality of people’s lives and bring back human dignity to the marginalised communities.

Reaffirming her departmental commitment in the construction of houses announced by Premier Modise, Mohono reminded all South Africans that access to housing is a democratic and constitutional and most importantly to all the vulnerable groups that include the elderly, women and child headed households.

She said her department will ensure that there are enough housing inspectors who will ensure quality of houses built.

This project is expected to create jobs for the unemployed youth, men and women of Groot Marico.
