Klerksdorp Police are investigating an inquest docket after a 49 year old pilot died in a plane crash at PC Pelser Airport in Klerksdorp. The incident occurred Saturday, 30 June 2012 at about 10h11. According to information, the deceased was a participant in an Air Display Show.
It is alleged that two pilots were flying in different planes showcasing their skills, making circular flying manoeuvres close to the ground. The two planes were flying parallel to each other when Gian Franco Cigione lost control and crashed into the ground. Cigione’s plane crashed next to the Klerksdorp Cemetery and he died at the scene.
No other people were injured during the accident and the surrounding field was set alight. The cremation wall of the cemetery was also damaged. At this stage the cause of the crash is still unknown and Police are still investigating.
