39 buses fail road-worthiness test

The Department of Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison has since Monday tested 134 buses that will be traveling long distances during this Easter holidays. Among those only 95 passed while 39 failed the road-worthiness test, while four others were discontinued due to the severity of the defaults discovered on them.

The department embarked on an unannounced visit to different bus depots, where several buses were subjected to tests for roadworthiness. Meanwhile those that failed the test were further subjected to retest, failing which they will be discontinued.

The department further discontinued eight taxis which were also found to be having serious defects during a raid conducted in different taxi ranks across the province.  The search for the unroadworthy vehicles is part of the arrive alive campaign, which has been intensified. The search will continue throughout the Easter period.

Human Settlements Public Safety MEC Desbo Mohono has appealed to motorists to be extra careful on the main roads of the province and adhere to road rules. Mohono further warned that those caught violating the law, will be harshly dealt with during and after Easter period. She said that all operations will continue for 24 hours to ensure that traffic flows and to prevent accidents.”We will strive to be more visible throughout the period just to save lives of law abiding drivers” said Mohono.
