In an effort to reduce road fatalities caused by drunken driving, North West Public Safety Traffic officers arrested 31 motorists for drunken driving in Potchefstroom, Primosa and Ikageng over the past weekend.
Nine women drivers and a lawyer were among the suspects who are expected to appear in the Potchefstroom Magistrate Court on Monday to answer to charges of drunken driving.
The arrests brings to 61 the number of motorists arrested for drunken driving since the provincial department embarked on a province wide special operation last week to inculcate responsible driver behaviour in order to reduce fatalities on public roads.
Meanwhile, North West MEC for Public Safety, Howard Yawa had earlier issued a stern warning to motorists to brace themselves for a sober festive season or face arrest and jail through the special operation targeted at drunken driving.
