231 homes for Muyexe and 4 700 homes for Tubatse residents!

During last night state of the nation address, President Jacob declared 2010 as the year of action. The Limpopo Department of Local Government and Housing is already responding to the call to work faster, harder and smarter!

Today MEC Soviet Lekganyane officially handed over homes to residents in Mukutung village in the Greater Tubatse municipality. The project is part of the 4 700 homes which have been built in the municipality between 2002 and 2009.

President Jacob Zuma acknowledged the department’s on going work in Muyexe during the state of the nation address last night. Muyexe village in Giyani has been identified as a pilot site for the Comprehensive Rural Development programme. The department has already completed 231 homes there.

MEC Lekganyane said: “We are very humbled by the President’s acknowledgement of the progress we are making in improving the lives of our people. We have committed ourselves to ensuring that every family that needs shelter in Limpopo should get shelter and we shall further strive to increase the pace of delivering other basic services”.

MEC Lekganyane further said “poverty, homelessness and underdevelopment are our enemies and we shall confront them head on”.

Since 1994, the government has built more than three million homes all over the country. In Limpopo, we have built over 300 000 homes. This means over 1,2 million people in this province of a population of 5,5 million live in homes built by government. We are now working closely with other sector departments like Education, Health, Safety and Security and Water Affairs to ensure that settlements are planned for and are equipped with all social amenities.

In this way, we are beginning to address some of the challenges of an integrated approach to rural development which has the establishment and improvement of infrastructure as its starting point, and the eradication of poverty and underdevelopment as its ultimate goal.
