16 Days of Activism on Violence against Women and Children

The Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) notes with concern that in recent weeks the number of cases in violent crimes have increased with the onset of the 16 Days of activism campaign. The Commission has noted the high publicity that has been generated by the Jules High School rape case, Greenstone rape case and Dewani murder case to name but a few, which demonstrates to us that there is still a rampant increase in violence against women and children. The purpose of this campaign is to generate an increased level of awareness pertaining to the high incidence of violence perpetuated against women and children and challenge perpetrators of these offences to change their behaviour.

The CGE therefore call on faith based organisation (FBOs), non governmental organisations (NGOs), community based organisations (CBOs), civil society organisations (CSOs) and other stakeholders to observe and work on programmes aimed at ending violence on women and children. We also call upon all interested parties to join us in various provincial programmes as we accelerated our efforts to fight all forms of violence against women and children, in an endeavour to create a society free from gender oppression and inequality.
