The newly inaugurated North West MEC for Local Government and Traditional Affairs, China Dodovu has today expressed his full confidence in the department’s management which he said, is constituted by men and women who are equal to the task of building viable municipalities and sound institutions of traditional leadership.
This he said during his first interaction with the departmental management today. MEC Dodovu indicated that his vision was to have a department that is able to discharge its mandate of ensuring that municipalities are able to bring about quality services to their respective communities. “The road ahead of us is still long but I am confident that it is only when we pull in one direction that we will be able to realise our objective as an institution. Let us all work towards a common vision, goal and create a conducive environment for the rest of the employees to perform their duties to the best of their abilities in order to take the department to the next level,” he said.
MEC Dodovu boasts vast of experience and knowledge in the field of Local Government, having served in many structures of government and as a former Executive Mayor of the City of Matlosana and currently the Deputy chairperson of the Province, it is envisaged that his leadership and political role will ensure that the department is taken to greater heights
He expressed his concern over the poor financial audit reports of municipalities. “It is high time that we create municipalities that are self sustainable and this we can achieve, by enforcing stringent debt recovery and revenue enhancement strategies.
MEC Dodovu also registered his concern over municipalities that are unable to spend their Municipal Infrastructure Grants yet there are still many impoverished households out there, which he said it should be a thing of the past “I have an open mind, I believe in the capabilities of this team gathered here today and I can assure you that we are going to improve and succeed because we will work effectively and efficiently as a team”. he concluded
MEC Dodovu will, in the next few weeks be meeting with different departmental stakeholders including amongst others, Mayors, Executive Mayors, Municipal Managers, traditional leaders and the general staff members.
