“Buses impounded at a major road block on Moloto Road”

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) coordinated a major roadblock this morning at the notorious Moloto Road, involving the following traffic authorities:

* Tshwane metro
* Gauteng provincial traffic services
* Gauteng Public Transport inspectorate
* Mpumalanga traffic services
* Nokeng local traffic authority
* Kameeldrift South African Police Service (SAPS) and
* Cullinan disaster management

The Moloto Road is one of the notorious roads in the country with accidents happening often and invariably a bus is involved. This morning the RTMC determined one of the causes of accidents on that road.

Between 06h00 and 09h00, 85 busses were stopped. 15 busses were impounded of which 12 had invalid permits and three for fitness. One bus driver was arrested for recklessness and negligence. The roadblock was not only targeting busses but also other vehicle types. 30 motorists were issued with Adjudicative Administration of Road Traffic Offences (AARTO) notices.

AARTO is still at a pilot stage in Tshwane and Johannesburg metros, it has not yet been rolled out nationally. National roll out for AARTO will happen in 2010.

We appeal to motorists to check their vehicles before embarking on any trip.

We encourage all road users to report bad driving on 0861 400 800.
