Easter school holidays and Easter weekend is upon us and it is during this time that our roads are congested, as all road users’ travel to different holiday destinations.
Embarking on a holiday trip or journey of any kind is often exciting especially during long weekends. Unfortunately these trips are often not properly planned by road users and safety is not given top priority during the journey. These often results in a large number of accidents, deaths and injuries.
Before undertaking a journey, it is important that you give your vehicle a thorough pre-trip check and service. Mechanical failure will not only frustrate you due to being stranded alongside the road but could also endanger your life and the lives of your passengers.
A pre-trip inspection includes the following:
* Look under the vehicle for obvious leaks or obstructions
* Check all lights and indicator lenses. They must be clean and without cracks
* Make sure that outside mirrors are clean and in good condition
* Check the windscreen to ensure that it is clean and without damage
* Check your tyres for correct inflation, visible damage and depth of tread
* Check oil, water and brake fluid levels, fan belt, spare wheel, jack and wheel spanner
* Once the outside has been checked, have someone help you check the parking lights, brake lights and indicators to ensure that they are in good working order
* Keep your daylights on for maximum visibility
The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) is committed to ensuring that road users adhere to the rules of the road, and that we all arrive alive.
