The Gauteng Provincial Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Community Safety will on Friday, 11 September 2026, receive a briefing from the Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Tommy Mthombeni, on crime statistics and policing performance in Gauteng during the 1st Quarter of the 2026/27 financial year, covering the period April to June 2026.
The briefing comes against the backdrop of a particularly eventful quarter for law enforcement and community safety in Gauteng, including the build-up to anti-immigration marches and protests in Gauteng and across the country, with groups demanding that undocumented foreign nationals leave South Africa by 30 June 2026.
The quarter was also marked by the Cleveland mass shooting, in which 13 people were killed, once again placing gun violence, illegal firearms and the effectiveness of policing and community safety interventions firmly under scrutiny.
The Committee is expected to use the briefing to interrogate the latest crime trends, assess the performance of law enforcement in Gauteng and seek clarity on emerging threats and policing priorities across the province.
