Zeerust to roll sleeves to eliminate crime hotspot

A crime hotspot that has contributed to violent crimes like hijacking, robbery and rape in Zeerust in the North West province is to be eliminated during a Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) Letsema Campaign to be held tomorrow, Tuesday, 22 February 2011.

The de-bushing and grass cutting of overgrown vegetation between Zeerust, Ikageleng township and Sanvlaagte scheduled to commence at 9:00am is part implementation of the CPTED strategy. The strategy aimed at reducing environmental factors like disused buildings and overgrown bushes along footpaths along which vulnerable citizens more especially women and children could be accosted by criminals.

The campaign is joint effort involving the North West Department of Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison, South African Police Service, Zeerust Community Policing Cluster Board, the Zeerust Community Policing Forum in partnership with Ramotshere Moiloa Local Municipality.

The municipality is one of the few municipalities in the province that have adopted the CPTED strategy and as part of its implementation, installed 12 high-mast lights in Dinokana and Lentsweletsoku villages at a cost of R2,3 million to support of the war against crime.

In intensifying its contribution, the municipality has also gone on tender and will be shortly appointing contractors to install twelve other high mast lights to be spread across Gopane, Madutle and Mokgola villages.
