North West MEC for Public Safety, Howard Yawa is to lead a public-private partnership (PPP) mobilised for active community service in rural villages of Moretele Local Municipality on Saturday as part of celebrating former President Nelson Mandela's 91st birthday and 67 years of community service.
The joint programme for the partnership of the North West Department of Public Safety and Moretele Local Municipality includes cleaning and painting of Cyferskuil Police Station near Radium, distribution of food parcels to needy families at Bosplaas, celebration of the day with the elderly and presentation of presents to five elders of the same birth date with uTata Madiba in Moretele.
"President Jacob Zuma's declaration of Mandela Day has spurred all sections of our communities to take forward the legacy of humility and selflessness that Madiba as our icon espoused and personified in pursuit of freedom, equality, unity and a better life for all. We are confident that the phenomenal response we have received from our youth and the business sector to the call to render community service will boost the morale of our police," says MEC Yawa.
The initiative is supported and co-sponsored by Pretoria Portland Cement (PPC), Builders Trade Depot in Rustenburg and Xstrata Alloys-Merafe Resources and involves officials of the Department of Public Safety, members of the South African Police Service, Cyferskuil Community Policing Forum and volunteers from the village.
The departmental programme for Mandela Day includes feeding of homeless people and street children around Mafikeng by call centre staff supported by Buffalo Park Lodge.
