World Hospice and Palliative Care Day

Deputy Minister of Health Dr Molefi Sefularo will deliver a keynote address in Klerksdorp on Friday this week, to mark the World Hospice and Palliative Care Day on 9 October 2009. His speech will outline Department of Health's commitment to hospice and palliative care.

The event has been organised by Hospice Palliative Care Association (HPCA) to raise awareness about the needs of people living with life threatening diseases such as cancer and AIDS. Member hospices, funders, representatives from various health forums and non-governmental organisations (NGOs), will attend the event.

The World Health Organisation's (WHO's) definition of palliative care is to improve the quality of life for patients and family members facing the diagnosis of life threatening or life limiting illness, through early identification.
