World Environment Day to be celebrated with 2010 FIFA World Cup trophy tour

Buyelwa Sonjica, the Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs will launch the National Waste campaign as part of the World Environment Day celebrations in Soweto.

The launch will form part of the programme of the Coca-Cola 2010 FIFA World Cup trophy tour and will take place at the Dlamini multi-purpose centre in Soweto on Saturday, 5 June 2010.

This provides an excellent platform for the launch as it is a call to South Africans to be good hosts and welcome the world to a cleaner South Africa for 2010 and beyond!

The campaign is part of the Department of Environmental Affair's efforts to address waste reduction and preservation of natural habitats. Through this campaign, the department would like to mobilise society to take action and change their behaviour towards the environment, starting with waste, a most visible manifestation of environmental degradation.

The effectiveness of many waste measures, particularly those aimed at waste reduction, recycling and litter prevention, depends to a significant extent on public and consumer awareness and changes in behaviour.

The development of a coherent communications and awareness strategy around waste issues is therefore, an important component of the national waste management strategy that is being developed by the Department of Environmental Affairs.

The department and its agencies, Indalo Yethu and Buyisa-eBag have worked collaboratively on a comprehensive national call to action to the nation to reduce the throw away culture and create wealth from waste.

The launch is also significant as it takes place during June, which is dedicated national Environment Month in South Africa. Country wide community activations, especially at taxi ranks in partnership with taxi associations and at town hall imbizos, street theatre and recycling enterprise development are key activities for the national campaign.

Media is invited to attend the event.
