World AIDS Day

The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development will commemorate the World AIDS Day, which is commemorated worldwide on 1 December, with a sports tournament at Tsolo Agriculture and Rural Development Institute from 9 to 10 December.

The department’s employee wellness programme has chosen the OR Tambo District due to its high HIV and AIDS infection rate as highlighted by the Eastern Cape AIDS Council.

The programme aims to create awareness about HIV and AIDS and the department through this programme is able assist the staff infected and affected by HIV and AIDS while it also offers HIV Counseling and Testing.

Through the employee wellness, the department is able support employees on extended sick leave and assist employees with challenges affecting work performance.

The aim of day will be to encourage employees not only to practice safe sex but to use sports to keep fit and learn how to live with those affected and infected with HIV and AIDS.

It is the view of the programme that through sports, like netball and soccer- which will be played on those days – the employees will be able to mingle and share information about HIV and AIDS.

The second day will have speeches HIV and AIDS activists including representatives from the AIDS Council and there will be HIV and AIDS test as well as baseline testing for BP, cholesterol and BMI.

Members of the media are hereby invited to join the departmental employees as they celebrate this august occasion.
