The MEC for Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism Tebogo Modise will be in Logagane in the North West on Thursday, 22 September at 09h00 to inform women about specific programmes and activities which will ensure that there is increased women participation in the mainstream economy. This is geared towards strengthening the relationship between the department and women development programmes.
Whilst there, the MEC will hand over office furniture and computers to support an Information centre in the area and will take two women under her departments wing as its employees in the centre.
A section of the centre will focus on the dissemination of information about departmental programmes which are geared towards developing communities. Women are an important factor and source of sustainable economic growth as they take greater percentage of the country’ workforce.
The government therefore has put in place mechanisms to ensure that women integrally involved and targeted in the design and implementation of economic empowerment and development initiatives.
Tackling poverty and achieving the Millennium Development Goals and other internationally agreed development goals can only be met when untapped potential of women in eradicating extreme poverty is recognised and supported.
This commitment is a vital part of an effective strategy whereby the government made it a priority for putting legislative framework and systems in place in addressing the challenge of women empowerment and creating an enabling environment to ensure that women in business are presented with opportunities.
For women to be productive and participate in the country’s social, economic and political processes, their rights must be fully protected by law.
In addressing challenges faced by women, the department will interact with women to solicit inputs towards the development of an integrated programme of action inclusive of municipalities that will benefit their businesses.
