Western Cape MEC for Human Settlements, Bonginkosi Madikizela to hold a public meeting in Mew Way, Khayelitsha to address housing allocations in the Nuwe Begin Housing Project

Human Settlements MEC Bonginkosi Madikizela will hold a public meeting in OR Tambo Hall/Mew Way, Khayelitsha to explain how houses will be allocated in the Nuwe Begin housing project. The meeting will begin at 18h00 on Monday, 13 February 2012.

The project will yield 1 200 fully subsidised housing opportunities, of which 900 will be for residents of TR Section. Minister Madikizela is concerned about claims that only people living on a wetland in Site B, Khayelitsha, will benefit from the project. This is not true, and beneficiaries will be drawn from both people living on the wetland, and also from surrounding areas.

Some people may have moved to the wetland recently, and it would be unfair to prioritise them over those who may have been patiently waiting for houses for years.  If they were all prioritised, it would set a precedent that people could move to areas like wetlands or railway tracks, which are unsuitable for habitation, and then force the government's hand to provide housing for them.

Beneficiaries will be drawn from the City of Cape Town’s housing demand list. The manner of selection will be fair and transparent, and will prioritise those who have been waiting the longest, and who are the most deserving.

MEC Madikizela will explain the selection criteria to the community at the meeting and clear up any misconceptions about allocations.
