Western Cape Anti-Piracy Campaign

The Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry (the dti), Thandi Tobias-Pokolo will host the first leg of the Anti-Piracy roll-out campaign at Bitou District Municipality in the Western Cape. The two-day working workshop and anti-piracy activation campaign will be held in News Horizon Hall, Plattenberg Bay, from 9 to 10 December 2010. Media is invited to attend.

The roll–out campaign follows the launch by Deputy Minister Tobias-Pokolo in Boksburg,

Johannesburg where industry members expressed their challenges and concerns regarding:

  • Collection and distribution of royalties
  • Piracy and copyright mismanagement
  • Insufficient government support in addressing their challenges
  • Ineffective and inefficient existing legislation

The workshop will educate artists around the Western Cape about the different programmes they can access to develop themselves and the interventions contained in the existing legal framework, the Copyright Act and related matters. The anti-piracy activation campaign will run concurrently with the artist workshop to mobilise the public about the negative impact of piracy and urge them to adopt an anti-piracy attitude.

The is supported by the Creative Industry, Bitou District Municipality, and Departments of Police, Home Affairs, Communication and Art and Culture.
