Week set aside to promote science

The Free State Department of Education will hold National Science Week (NSW) from Saturday 30 July until 7 August, 2011. The aim is to improve performance in Science and Technology and encourage learners to pursue careers in the science field.

National Science Week is an annual event incepted in 2000 by the Department of Science and Technology in partnership with Department of Basic Education and other stakeholders.

The emphasis of NSW 2011 will be on the following topics:

  • International Year of Chemistry (2011)
  • Scientific areas with a strong provincial knowledge and geographic focus
  • Indigenous Knowledge Systems
  • Energy Security

The Free State Department of Education invites all science learners to take part activities planned across the province. The activities will help to demystify science as a difficult subject and make it more accessible to all.

The theme for this year is “The role of Science in Economic Development”.
