"Voyage to the Cape" at Western Cape archives repository

The Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport invites the public to the annual celebration of National Archives Week. The theme for 2012 is "Voyage to the Cape".

These celebrations offer an opportunity to learn about the importance of preserving our documented memory and to appreciate its impact on our daily lives.

The activities include guided tours, workshops and exhibitions on immigration. Western Cape Genealogical Society representatives will assist the public to trace their family history and there will also be workshops on genealogical research, the making of paste paper and basic bookbinding.

The oldest records at the Western Cape Archives and Records Service are those of the journey of Jan van Riebeeck to the Cape in 1651. The other records cover many aspects of the Western Cape's history, for example, slavery, wills and estate papers, early maps of the Cape, church records, photographs, immigration, property and farm sources, building plans and marriages.
