The President of the Republic of South Africa, His Excellency Mr Jacob Zuma, will lead the South African delegation to the 21st Ordinary Session of the African Union Assembly, scheduled to take place on 26 and 27 May 2013 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The Summit coincides with the historic 50th Anniversary Celebrations of the Organisation of African Unity/ African Union, which will take place from 24 to 27 May.
The theme of the Summit is “Pan-Africanism and the African Renaissance”. The year 2013 is dedicated to the celebration of the founding of the OAU on 25 May 1963. This event will be the 24th Special Assembly of the African Union. The celebrations will culminate in the issuance of the AU Proclamation on Monday 27 May, following deliberations on the theme.
President Zuma will be supported by the Honourable Maite Nkoana-Mashabane, Minister of International Relations and Cooperation; the Honourable Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, Minister of Defence and Military Veterans; the Honourable Siyabonga Cwele, Minister of State Security and the Honourable Ms A Dlodlo, Deputy Minister of Public Service and Administration.
The summit is expected to review key interventions on peace and security, the implementation of NEPAD projects, the African Peer Review Mechanism, the Third Strategic Plan of the AU Commission and the AU Budget for 2014.
The summit is also expected to take stock of the challenges and achievements of the Organisation over the past 50 years, and to look at a conceptual framework for Vision 2063 – a view of Africa in the next 50 years.
