Deputy Minister Namane Masemola participates at second session of United Nations Habitat Assembly in Kenya, 29 to 30 May

The Deputy Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), Dr. Namane Dickson Masemola will attend and participate at the two-days Second Session of the United Nations Habitat.Assembly(UN­ HABITAT), to be held at the UN-Habitat Headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya from 29 - 30 May 2025.

The purpose of the second session of the United Nations Habitat Assembly follows the successful adjourned second session which was held from 5 to 9 June 2023 which adopted ten key resolutions that have placed UN­ Habitat on a trajectory to promote adequate housing, localization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), alignment of urbanisation and climate resilience,urban crisis recovery, and durable solutions on equitable financing.

Furthermore, the session is anticipated to be instrumental in shaping the work of UN-Habitat for the next four years, as Member States are expected to consider and approve the next strategic plan for the period 2026 to 2029.

Adraft forward-looking strategic plan has been developed by UN-Habitat in consultation with Member States and partners, and it aims at ensuring adequate housing, land, and basic services for all, targeting transformation of informal settlements and slums, and leveraging urbanization as a driver for sustainable development.

Among other matters, Member States will also consider draft international guidelines on people-centered smart cities, based on a request by Member States In Resolution 2/1 of the Assembly.
