Visit by the National Minister of Social Development Ms Bathabile Dlamini to the Northern Cape

The Minister of Social Development, Ms Bathabile Dlamini will on 2 December 2011, visit the community of Strydenburg, Pixley Ka Seme District Municipality (Northern Cape). The details are as follows:

Spearheaded by Minister Dlamini, the campaign aims to create greater public awareness of the Department’s programmes and services to tackle socio-economic challenges such as poverty, HIV and AIDS, social exclusion, child protection and substance abuse amongst others.

The campaign also seeks to strengthen and mobilise communities, strengthen service delivery partnerships through promotion of constructive engagement between the department, its agencies as well as communities.

The visit to Strydenburg is also an extension to World Aids Day where the Minister will be addressing the community of Strydenburg and surrounding areas on social and structural factors that influence HIV and AIDS, Tuberculosis and Sexual Transmitted Diseases.

Her visit to the province will be ended off at the Provincial Community Builder of the Year Awards where she will be delivering the key note address. The Community Builder of the Year Award is an annual award that honours heroes and heroines and recognises their efforts at improving the quality of life of their communities in areas like education, health, sport & recreation, environment and crime prevention. The project is a Nation Building project and was started 20 years ago by the late Dr Aggrey Klaaste.

Objectives of Community Builder of the Year (CBOTY):

  • To encourage a spirit of volunteerism and nation building by recognising and celebrating the contribution of diverse individuals, groups and institutions towards the upliftment of South African communities.
  • Acknowledge community workers for their outstanding work and sacrifice – irrespective of race, colour or creed – all members of our rainbow nation.
  • Identify and highlight those community workers who freely give of their time and efforts to uplift their communities and set an example for others to follow.
  • Recognise corporations that make positive contributions to the upliftment of their communities.
  • Encourage other community members to uplift themselves in the same manner as these role models.

The Minister of Social Development will be accompanied by the Premier of the Northern Cape Ms Hazel Jenkins to the Community Builder of the Year only and by the MEC for Social Development Mr Alvin Botes to both events.
