Visit by Dr Aleida Guevara in the North West province

Dr Aleida Guevara is the daughter of the Marxist revolutionary Ernesto “Che” Guevara, of Cuba. She is like her father is a Marxist and a doctor by profession. Dr Aleida Guevara has been an advocate for human rights and debt relief for developing nations. Dr Aleida Guevara will be accompanied by the Cuban Ambassador, Mr Angel Villa and her brother Camilo Guevara and two other representatives from Cuba. Dr Aleida’s visit to South Africa forms part of the 50th anniversary of the Cuban Revolution and 15 years of the diplomatic relations between South Africa and Cuba.

This then presents an opportunity for the province to host Dr Aleida Guevara in the province as this will add momentum to the North West-Santiago relations.
The North West Province has signed a twinning agreement with Santiago de Cuba in 1996 by Premier Molefe and President of the Provincial Assembly of the People’s Power (Santiago de Cuba) Dr Luis Estruch Rancano. The agreement was based on the following:
* Promoting a wider cooperation in all possible fields
* Exchange of knowledge on their history, culture, customs, traditions and establishing links guided by population’s interest.
* Facilitate and promote economic and commercial links between South Africa and Cuba businessmen and enterprises of provinces.

Dr Aleida will have interactive sessions with government departments, public lecture at the North West University (Mafikeng Campus) and a session with Cuban professionals in the province. She will visit the Moses Kotane Municipality and route to the Western Cape province.
