Vereeniging Community Corrections Forum officially announces a joint Cycling Tour Crime awareness project

The Department of Correctional Services in conjunction with other security cluster and role players within the Vereeniging Community Corrections Forum fully support the South African national government anticrime strategise and operational plans that seek to make awareness and stop crime activities within our local areas in the municipalities of Metsimaholo and Sedibeng district. On this note, the department will launch the Cycling Tour Crime awareness project on 20 to 23 April 2001 at Medium Centre Groenpunt area as planned.

Background

The current correctional facilities statistics show an overwhelming increase in juvenile offenders and inmates. The majority are still of school going age. The interactions the Department of Correctional Services had with different local schools and South African Police Service (SAPS) within these two municipal districts have shown that most learners do not have the practical understanding and knowledge of what is happening inside correctional centres, which may be one of the indicators why they engaged in criminal activities. It has been proven that the engaging of ex"offenders in schools is not as effective and efficient as envisaged due to lack of proper co"ordination.

Aims or objectives

* To promote public awareness and understanding of Cycling Tour Anticrime campaign as a societal responsibility across all levels (primary or secondary)
* Build partnership with the public and Security stakeholders sectors of the society (business sector or local governance)
* Create platform for various sponsors or partners in different sectors of the society to showcase their commitment and contributions to the causes of Cycling Tour Anticrime awareness campaign
* To enhance efforts aimed at maintaining anticrime campaigns in the delivery of criminal justice system in particular and the government sector in general
* To serve as a climax for showcasing or demonstration of success of anticrime awareness campaign
* In line with the concept of correctional supervision, rehabilitations, re-integration of offenders and social crime prevention; organise a Cycling Tour Anticrime awareness campaign to Correctional centres and local in the two municipal districts
* The aim being to emphasise the need for offending offenders to participate in corrective programmes that seek to prepare them mentally for the outside world challenges once released, also to highlight the plight of ex-offenders and even to raise funds for the programmes aimed at their rehabilitation and re-integration

The programme will take place in two parts:
* address to learners by ex-offenders and participating stakeholders on assembly
* group interactions with identified learners and then referral to existing programmes coordinated by stakeholders where there is a need.

Malkop Kwaito music group (offenders) will perform live on stage during the tour
