Unemployed youth to benefit through the launch of the NYS

A total of 1 000 unemployment youth in the Eastern Cape is going to benefit through the launch of the Department of Roads and Public Works National Youth Service (NYS), which is linked to the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP).

The programme is to be implemented in the Eastern Cape targeting 1 000 youth, between the ages of 18 to 35. The youngsters will maintain government buildings such as clinics, hospitals, schools and offices. They will be provided with training and earn a stipend of R50 per day. The project duration is 18 months and it will be implemented throughout the province.

The project will be announced in the form of a launch on Friday, 6 November 2009 in Mount Frere. The event will involve the Premier and Roads and Public Works MEC Pemmy Majodina. Ms Majodina therefore extends an invitation to you to join us for the occasion.

The objectives of the launch are:

* Profile the implementation of NYS within Roads and Public Works
* Increase the public awareness on strides the department is taking in mainstreaming youth development within its core mandate
* Showcase the linkages between EPWP and NYS as part of government strategy in addressing unemployment and skills development
* Mobilise the community and other social partners to support the NYS programme.
