The Cuban Government has offered five scholarships to young needy South African male and female candidates to study for a degree in physical education sports for five years at the international school for sport and physical education in Havana, Cuba from this year (2009).
Two students from the Free State province met the requirements as stipulated by the Cuban authorities to study for a degree in physical education and sports in Havana, Cuba. These students are Mr Thapelo Raymond Taoa from Edenburg (Kopanong Municipality) and Mr Usa Isaac Kabelo Mothibi from phase six (Mangaung Municipality). They were identified by the Departments of Education as well as Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation in the province.
The Cuban Government will be responsible for the following:
* payment for the studies
* provision of accommodation, meals and pocket money.
The provincial Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation will be responsible for the following:
* one single local air ticket to ORTIA
* transport/local air tickets from and to ORTIA for holiday purposes in South Africa.
The Sport and Recreation South Africa will take care of the following:
* one single ticket to Havana, Cuba
* return air tickets (Havana/OR Tambo International Airport and back) after every two years of study (vacation)
* one single air ticket - Cuba to South Africa - after final year of study and
* a monthly stipend of 200 US Dollars.
The Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation will host the send off function in honour of these students on 2 September 2009 and they will depart to Cuba on 3 September 2009.
