In pursuance of its commitment to increase access to public transport system by all the people of the province, the Eastern Cape Department of Transport will kick start a Taxi Driver and Conductor Based Sign Language road show campaign.
Aimed at ensuring more access and easy travelling by public transport for people living with disabilities such as sign language, the road shows will bring more educational tools in taxi ranks in and around the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro.
With the 2010 FIFA World Cup expected to attract scores of sign language speakers to the games in the metro, the need for these roads shows become more potent.
The department will kick off its road show with in Korsten taxi rank on 2 June 2010 with the last episode of the road shows set for the Uitenhage taxi rank on 3 June 2010 in the morning.
Members of the media are invited to attend the road shows and get firsthand experience of the difficulties experienced by the sign language speakers and other people living with disabilities in accessing public transport system.
Eastern Cape Transport MEC, Ghishma Barry has committed her department to ensuring quality transport systems for a better life for all the people of the province.
While the road show and further sign language will give the public transport operators a shot in the arm, more people living with disabilities are expected to make use of public transport, especially during the upcoming 2010 FIFA World Cup.
