Transport to pray for roads ahead of the 2010 FIFA World Cup

With only 10 days left to the kick off of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the Eastern Cape Department of Transport will team up with local pastors in the Chris Hani district to seek celestial intervention against road accidents.

The department expects increased traffic volumes on the roads as scores of soccer enthusiasts will be travelling to Gauteng to watch the opening game of the tournament between hosts, South Africa and Mexico.

With the district being a road network link to Gauteng and the Nelson Mandela Bay, where many matches will be played during the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the department will boost this prayer with massive traffic police visibility to ensure safe travelling. Added in the fold are road rangers who will remove inhibiting stray animals on the roads.

We appeal to all livestock owners in communities and the farmers in the province, especially on the N6, the N2 and the R72 to make sure their animals are safe in grazing lands and not anywhere near the roads.

Set to be hosted on 3 June in Queenstown, the prayer session is fomented by the increasing number of road accidents in the local roads of Chris Hani as many sport fans will travel in the district roads when going to their matches.

Members of the media are invited to attend the prayer session to take place in Queenstown, details are as follows:

Date: 3 June 2010
Venue: First Caltex Garage when coming from East London direction towards Queenstown. It will be the last Garage when leaving Queenstown towards East London on N6.
Time: 10h00
