With the 2010 FIFA World Cup around the corner, the Eastern Cape Department of Transport this week, will start the intensification of its traffic law enforcement training programme with a special focus on incident management systems (IMS).
This training, which is expected to commence on Friday, 16 April 2010 at the Fire Department in Aliwal North, is provided for officials that are dealing with accident and incident scenes, which include provincial and municipal traffic officers, South African Police Service (SAPS) members and South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL) officials.
Also included in this training programme are customer care consultants, as they are the ones who are receiving information from the traffic officers on the scene, specifically so that they can have that insight on how an accident incident scene is coordinated through incident management systems.
IMS training will be held on the following dates and venues prior to the world cup:
16 April 2010: Aliwal North, Fire Department
22 April 2010: Port Elizabeth, provincial traffic, Struandale
29 April 2010: East London
6 May 2010: Mthata
12 May 2010: Queenstown
17 May 2010: Cradock, SAPS area office, conference room
21 May 2010: Grahamstown, library hall
26 May 2010: Graaff Reinett
This follows intensive refresher courses for 454 provincial traffic officers, which was conducted in the last financial year in order to prepare the officers for the tournament.
"We are doing all this because traffic management is one of the critical elements of our 2010 transport master plan. During the tournament, we call upon the people of the Eastern Cape and all road users to notify us through our Customer Care Centre toll free number 0800 644 644 about any accident or incident," says MEC for Transport, Safety and Liaison, Ghishma Barry.
