As part of the 2009 October Transport Month Campaign, Transport Minister S'bu Ndebele and Eastern Cape MEC for Transport, Safety and Liaison, Ghishma Barry will open the newly-surfaced Madwaleni Hospital Road, which cost R90 million tomorrow, 8 October 2009 at 12h00.
The celebration for this project will be held at Ngqwangele Junior Secondary School in Elliotdale.
This project was the first phase of two for the upgrading of approximately 33 kilometres of provincial district roads DR18033 and DR08328 between Elliotdale and the Madwaleni Mission Hospital. The existing gravel road from Elliotdale through to the Madwaleni Mission Hospital was in an extremely poor condition with the loss of much of the wearing course, a situation which is aggravated during the wet season when sections of the road become impassable.
“Through the integration of our inaccessible and impassable roads programme into the alternative surfacing technologies programme, we have been able to successfully complete phase one, the section of DR08328 from DR08327 to the Madwaleni Mission Hospital, in May 2009 now provides surfaced road for the final 12.91 kilometres approaching the mission hospital,” says MEC Barry.
The project was structured in accordance with the Expanded Public Works Programme principles to maximise the provision of employment opportunities, training and skills development to local community.
The tomorrow’s event will be preceded by a visit to the East London Airport by Minister Ndebele and MEC Barry at 10h00. They will then fly with a helicopter to Madwaleni.
