Transport Deputy Minister Jeremy Cronin to address Mamelodi Community on railway safety

Transport Deputy Minister Mr Jeremy Cronin is to join the Railway Safety Regulator (RSR), to deliver a keynote address at a Railway Safety Imbizo in the community of Mamelodi East, as part of the October Transport Month. The Regulator strongly believes that communities play a pivotal role in railway safety.

Date: Wednesday, 12 October 2011
Time: 11h30 for 12h00
Venue: Stanza Bopape Community Hall

Media are invited to capture the proceedings, which will contain addresses from key stakeholders. Thereafter, one on one interviews with Ministry and RSR officials may be conducted, by prior arrangement.

The community of Mamelodi East is cut into two by a Transnet Freight Rail line. This poses a number of challenges such as trespassing, which sometimes leads to people being struck by trains; cable theft; and train vandalism. These challenges affect both the community and the operator (TFR). Deputy Minister Cronin will address the community on their role in ensuring safety on railways and in the railway environment.

The Railway Safety Regulator, in line with its mandate, promotes railway safety and security awareness amongst stakeholders. This is through community outreach programmes and campaigns carried out in partnership with train operators.
