Trade and Industry to host the Technogirl Entrepreneurship workshop in Limpopo

Trade and Industry Deputy Minister, Elizabeth Thabethe (MP) will deliver a keynote address at the Technogirl Entrepreneurship workshop that will be held at Protea Hotel, the Ranch, in Polokwane from 12 to 13 March 2011. Members of the media are invited to attend.

The Technogirl Entrepreneurship workshop is aimed at encouraging young school girls to pursue different career paths in various sectors of the economy, especially those that have been previously male-dominated. Further, the workshop intends to encourage young women to play a significant and meaningful role in the country’s economic development and growth by becoming creators of wealth and job opportunities.

Deputy Minister Thabethe says that this year’s workshop could not have been hosted at a more appropriate time than now, seeing that we have just celebrated the International Women’s Day on 8 March 2011. “It is my belief that entrepreneurship is the best and most critical intervention needed to nurture and grow the talent of many girls into becoming successful businesswomen of tomorrow that the country needs”, she said.

The two-day activity will see 100 girls Grade10 to 12 from 10 selected schools in Limpopo workshopped by leaders in the business fraternity on issues such as lessons and challenges from the business world, the importance of technology and innovation, and on health matters. The young and aspirant learners will also be tasked with a challenge to present the most viable entrepreneurship ideas that have potential to assist in cultivating entrepreneurship amongst other girls throughout the country. Their 2

proposals will be assessed by a panel of judges, with the group that presented the best idea with credible experience in business announced on Sunday, 13 March 2011.

All participants will receive certificates in acknowledgement of their efforts.

Prizes awarded to the top three schools will be as follows:

  • top three will receive a desk top computer each
  • luncheon with the Deputy Minister
  • attendance of the Technology for women in Business Awards (October 2011)
  • sponsorship from Cell C of a four-in-one laser jet printer, scanner, photocopier and fax
