Three more road projects would be kick-started tomorrow (Thursday) by Public Works, Roads and Transport, bringing to four the number of road rehabilitation projects undertaken by the department to help revitalise Mafikeng.
The Premier of the North West province, Thandi Modise and provincial MEC for the department, Mahlakeng Mahlakeng, are scheduled to turn the sod in Mafikeng and hand over the projects to appointed contractors.
The department pledged R33 million a month ago, as a contribution towards the revitalisation of Mafikeng and Mmabatho, the intervention which is expected to yield at least 250 job opportunities for local communities within the next three months.
This followed a call by Premier Modise, in November last year, urging departments and the private sector, to assist in giving Mafikeng a face-lift to befit a provincial seat of government and capital of the province.
With its R33 million pledge, the Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport undertook to rehabilitate some of the roads and streets which were not in the immediate plans of the local municipality to upgrade.
The local municipality has already prioritised for rehabilitation several roads and streets in Mafikeng and Mmabatho.
The first project which is on target for completion within the next two months, is the rehabilitation of Ngaka Modiri Molema road at the cost of R13 million.
Included also in the departments programme, is to renovate and maintain government buildings in Mafikeng and Mmabatho.
Appointed contractors would be handed over the sites for recycling, paving and patchwork on Joe Slovo streets. Onkgopotse Tiro, Moshoeshoe.
The three projects are expected to be completed within the next three month.
The contract value for the 1.9 kilometres patchwork and reseal of Joe Slovo street is R4.4 million, the recycling of 2.4 kilometres stretch of Onkgopotse Tiro Street including the paving on the sides is R9.3 million; work on Moshoeshoe road including a portion of Sekame Road is R2.3 million.
