Three lives claimed in accident on N4 Toll Road near Middelburg

Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Vusi Shongwe has called on road users to exercise due care while driving in this incremental weather as slippery roads may lead to unnecessary accidents. This follows an accident that happened this morning when a Correctional Service vehicle and two other vehicles collided on N4 Toll Road near Middelburg.

The accident occurred when one of the vehicles lost control and swerved into the oncoming traffic colliding with a Light Delivery Vehicle (LDV) and a Mercedes Benz Sedan.

Two Correctional Services employees and LDV driver died on the scene. The prisoner, who was being transported from Barberton to Emalahleni, sustained serious injuries and was transported to Middelburg Hospital

Earlier indications are that one of drivers may have lost control due to slippery road from the resultant rain. The police have since opened an inquest docket.

Shongwe is sending his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and has wished the injured prisoner a speedy recovery.

He said drivers needed to switch on their headlights, keep safe following distances and exercise extreme care and caution to avoid accidents.
