Eastern Cape Department of Transport MEC Thandiswa Marawu together with Deputy Minister of Transport Sindisiwe Chikunga and Eqstra Holdings CEO Walter Stanley Smith embarked on a Road Safety Education Campaign Called “Think Pedestrian” in Qunu Village on 18 July 2012.
The campaign formed part of the Mandela Day Celebrations as well as honouring the 67 minutes initiative was held at the Milton Mbekela Senior School.
Addressing hundreds of learners, Chikunga said, “Mandela did not land from the sky and make extraordinary things, he grew up here in this land of Qunu. And what made him a world icon was his ability to listen to elders and education. Therefore you are the next Mandelas, what you need to do is to focus on your studies to be the leaders of tomorrow”.
She further reminded students about pedestrian accidents which cut short the chances for young people to realize their goals.
“We are here today to say be wise and think pedestrians, and take this massage to your families because the death of one of you could cost the country a leader,” said Chikunga.
“Think pedestrian is in line with the Decade of Action which was launched last year and is aimed at halfing road accident by 50% by 2020, something which cannot be achieved without your contribution; therefore you must be responsible pedestrians,” she added.
