The send off ceremony for Team North West participating at the National
Gymnaestrada in Durban will be held on Friday, 26 March 2010 at Rustenburg, Phokeng Civic Centre starting at 17h30.
After completing their preparations through rigorous training camps held over the past weekends, the 185 members Team North West will travel to the South African National Gymnaestrada taking place from 28 to 30 March 2010 at the Old Mutual Sport Hall, University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) Durban. Over 1 000 participants from seven provinces of the country are expected to perform during the event.
Gymnaestrada is a non-competitive gymnastics festival initiated by the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG). It takes place every four years in the country of one of the affiliated federations of the FIG and attracts over 20,000 participants from all over the world.
At the International event, gymnasts of all ages and background, men, women, disabled people, meet to share their passion and talent domains of gymnastics.
Ages of participants in Team North West range from eight to 70 years.
Among the notable successes of the programmes since its implementation in the province include; participation at the National Gymnaestrada Festival in 2006 following the successful provincial event earlier that year, participation at the 3rd International Tournament of Trampoline in 2006 in Portugal as well as participating at the 13th World Gymnaestrada Festival in 2007 in Austria.
Participants who would be selected in Durban will go on to represent South Africa at the World Festival in Lausanne, Switzerland on 10 to 16 July 2011.
Media is invited to attend and cover the Send Off ceremony which is expected to be attended by dignitaries that include MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture, Ms Grace Pampiri, Executive Mayor of Bojanala District Municipality, Cllr. Raymond Motsepe and representation from Royal Bafokeng Administration.
The theme for this year’s event is “African Magic”.
