The Department of Tourism will host a tourism ministers’ meeting (T20) under the theme: “Travel and Tourism: Stimuli for the Global Economy”, from 22 to 24 February 2010 at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg.
Travel and tourism make a valuable contribution to the economic stimuli required for the global economy’s recovery and is an important pillar of our efforts to unlock enhanced economic growth, infrastructure development, trade promotion, poverty eradication and job creation.
Tourism ministers’ meeting at the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) General Assembly in Kazakhstan last year expressed a strong sentiment that tourism should be further mainstreamed in global economic decision making, with a focus on the tourism sectors efforts to build resilience, stimulate new growth, and support the shift to a greener economy.
In addition to ministers responsible for tourism and the secretary general of the UNWTO, the meeting will also be attended by experts from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the United Nations Social and Economic Commission for Asia, the World Travel and Tourism Council and the International Labour Organisation (ILO).
The official opening of the T20 ministers’ meeting is scheduled for 10h00 to 11h00 on Tuesday, 23 February 2010 at the Sandton Convention Centre. Media access to the official opening will be limited to accredited media only. The rest of the meeting will not be open to media.
